INFLUENZA – The Flu

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It primarily affects the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. There are four types of influenza viruses: A, B, C, and D, but influenza A and B are responsible for seasonal flu outbreaks.

At Excelsior Urgent Care & Primary Care, 12520 Fairwood Parkway in Bowie, Maryland, our team provides flu shots every year in the fall just before flu season begins.

Influenza is characterized by sudden onset of symptoms, which may include:

  • Fever or feeling feverish
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sometimes vomiting or diarrhea, more common in children

Influenza spreads mainly through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.

Most people recover within a few days to two weeks, but influenza can lead to serious complications, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions. Complications can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and worsening of chronic conditions like asthma or heart disease.

Annual vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the flu and reduce its severity.
